Military models aren’t the main thing here but I’ve built my share of Jeeps, Panzers and Phantoms. Clunky trucks are a passion, and VWs are an obsession, having learned to drive on a ’71 Beetle and owned a 1/1 ’66. I am almost done with two baja bugs from a couple of those MPC baja kits, and this Kubelwagen will hit nicely alongside them.
Blue Tank made this 1/24th rendering of Porsche’s WWII counterpart to the Jeep in a detailed yet clunky curbside manner. Instructions recommend “burning” instead of cementing certain parts from behind. I’m not sure what scale the bust of a Nazi driver in steel helmet and uniform included in the kit is. – He looks more 1/35th, and his legs are merely implied since he himself is “curbside” also.
The knobby tires and smooth steel rims were earmarked for another project, while some plain steelies and Firestones from the old stalwart ’51 Chevy by AMT fit nicely with new axles made from sprue. A bumper from Evergreen styrene was added upfront, with headlights from a Revell Model A,and the headlights from Revell’s 1/35th 1934 coupe as foglights. Blackout slits were masked using Scotch tape before primer was laid on. Once the primer’s on, everything blends in. This white primer suggests an Alpine scene from James Bond or "Inception", or a Stalingrad treatment of the Kubelwagen-
Considering it's ugly past, it seems better to paint it a pretty shade, and pass it off as a VW “THE THING”-
